The work is attributed to Fuhiken Tokikaze, an artist associated with the early Ukiyo-e tradition. The composition is structured around the contrast between the soft, draped fabric of the green netting and the detailed, patterned kimono worn by the subject. The woman is shown in a seated posture, her attention directed toward a scroll held in her hands. Her expression is calm, reflecting a moment of quiet domesticity.

The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the flowing lines of the garments. The kimono features a complex pattern of floral motifs and geometric shapes, rendered with a muted palette that complements the overall tone of the piece. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the figure to occupy the centre of the viewer's attention. The mounting of the scroll itself includes decorative borders with floral designs, which frame the central image and provide a sense of continuity with the patterns found on the subject's clothing.

Ukiyo-e works from this period often explored themes of daily life, fashion, and leisure. This particular piece captures a private, interior scene, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities of the era. The use of ink and colour on silk provides a subtle texture to the surface, enhancing the visual depth of the drapery and the paper of the scroll. The work demonstrates a balance between the representation of the human figure and the decorative elements of the surrounding environment, typical of the artistic conventions of the time.

You might also like

Mountains and Rivers Along the Kisokaidō - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Daimyo Procession to Edo - Hishikawa School — Hishikawa School

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Woman-Reading-under-a-Mosquito-Net_Poster_CompositorV1_1791616522820.jpg?v=1791616740
