The composition captures a seated woman on a balcony, framed by the vertical lines of open shutters. The scene looks out towards the Mediterranean, with the sea and a distant headland visible beyond the balustrade. Matisse uses a clear, structural approach to define the space, employing the architecture of the balcony to create a sense of depth while maintaining a focus on the figure.

The woman holds a green parasol, which provides a circular counterpoint to the rigid, rectangular geometry of the window frame and the balusters. Her pose is relaxed, and her form is rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork. The palette relies on the contrast between the cool blues of the shutters and the sea, the warm yellow of the door frame, and the neutral tones of the figure's attire.

Matisse often returned to the theme of the window in his work, using it as a device to mediate between the interior space and the exterior world. In this painting, the balcony acts as a threshold. The light is bright and Mediterranean, suggesting the warmth of the French coast. The application of paint is direct, with visible brushstrokes that reveal the artist's process. By simplifying the details of the figure and the surroundings, Matisse directs attention to the arrangement of colour and the balance of the composition. This piece reflects his interest in the decorative potential of painting, where the subject serves as a vehicle for exploring light, space, and the interaction of forms within a confined, domestic setting.

You might also like

Il pescatore by Carlo Carrà
Bathers by Pablo Picasso
Henri Matisse artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Woman-with-a-Green-Parasol-on-a-Balcony_Poster_CompositorV1_1791996289201.jpg?v=1791996619
