Pechstein was a founding member of this collective, which sought to break away from academic traditions in favour of a more primitive and emotive visual language. The woodcut medium, with its inherent resistance and requirement for bold, simplified forms, suited the Expressionist desire for unmediated artistic expression.

The composition depicts three female figures in a domestic interior. The scene is reduced to essential shapes, with the stark contrast between black ink and the light paper surface creating a graphic, flattened space. Pechstein avoids fine detail, focusing instead on the rhythmic arrangement of the figures and the heavy, angular lines that define their bodies. A small stove in the background provides a sense of place, yet the environment remains secondary to the physical presence of the bathers. The rough, unrefined edges of the woodcut blocks are visible, adding to the tactile quality of the print.

During this period, Pechstein and his contemporaries often explored themes of the body in nature or simple domestic settings. By stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, the artist directs the viewer toward the structural harmony of the scene. The work reflects the broader interest in folk art and non-Western carving techniques that influenced early twentieth-century German art. This print is a clear example of the graphic power achieved through the woodcut process, where the artist works directly with the grain and texture of the wood to convey form and movement.

You might also like

Woman Putting on Her Shoes by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Sitting Female Nude in Landscape with Farmhouse by Heinrich Campendonk
More by Max Pechstein →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Women-Bathing_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120446304.jpg?v=1792200065
