The composition focuses on a quiet, domestic moment between the two figures. Yamauba reclines while Kintarō leans over her, his hand extended towards a cherry held in her mouth. The artist uses his signature style, known as okubi-e or large-head portraiture, to bring the subjects into close proximity with the viewer. By cropping the figures tightly, Utamaro emphasises their facial expressions and the physical connection between mother and child.

Utamaro was a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, particularly noted for his ability to capture psychological depth in his subjects. In this work, the muted colour palette and the soft, flowing lines of the figures create a sense of intimacy. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the interaction. The cherry acts as a small, precise detail that draws the eye, balancing the larger forms of the faces. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in Edo-period woodblock printing, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the subtle gradations of tone and colour.

This piece belongs to a series exploring the life of Yamauba, a figure from Japanese folklore often portrayed as a wild, powerful woman living in the mountains. Utamaro reinterprets this mythic character through a humanising lens, presenting her as a nurturing mother. The work remains a fine example of the artist's ability to blend traditional narrative themes with a modern, expressive aesthetic. It is a study in composition and character, showing how the artist manipulated space and form to convey emotion without the need for complex settings or elaborate backgrounds.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
View of Nihonbashi Itchōme Street - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Yamauba-and-Kintar-Playing-with-a-Cherry_Poster_CompositorV1_1791683314464.jpg?v=1791683562
