young-girl-standing-against-a-background-of-wheat-vincent-van-gogh
Young Girl Standing Against a Background of Wheat - Vincent van Gogh

A portrait of a young girl in a white dress and yellow hat, set against a field of wheat, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890.

Painted in Auvers-sur-Oise during the final months of his life, this portrait captures a young girl positioned before a field of wheat. The work displays the characteristic application of paint associated with the artist's late period, where short, rhythmic brushstrokes define both the figure and the surrounding environment. The girl wears a white dress with subtle pink touches, contrasting with the golden-yellow hat and the earthy tones of the wheat field. Scattered red poppies provide small points of colour that break the verticality of the stalks.

The composition is relatively flat, with the subject integrated into the texture of the background. The artist uses a palette of muted greens, browns, and ochres, punctuated by the brightness of the girl's hat and the dress. The figure stands in a static pose, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. This work belongs to a series of studies the artist produced in the summer of 1890, reflecting his interest in the rural life of the French countryside.

Technically, the painting demonstrates a shift towards a more decorative approach to the canvas surface. The repetition of the brushstrokes across the background creates a sense of unity between the subject and the field. The artist avoids traditional modelling of light and shadow, opting instead for a system of colour relationships to establish form. This approach allows the texture of the paint itself to become a primary element of the visual experience. The work remains a clear example of his late style, where the physical application of pigment is as important as the subject matter itself. It provides a view into the artist's final creative period, showing his continued experimentation with colour and form until his death in July 1890.

You might also like

The Painter of Sunflowers: Portrait of Vincent van Gogh by Paul Gauguin
Madame Cezanne in a Red Armchair by Paul Cézanne

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Young-Girl-Standing-Against-a-Background-of-Wheat_Poster_CompositorV1_1791987412432.jpg?v=1791987770
https://www.solisprints.com/products/young-girl-standing-against-a-background-of-wheat-vincent-van-gogh
