zes-markttaferelen-six-market-scenes-pieter-roosing
Zes markttaferelen (Six Market Scenes) - Pieter Roosing

A detailed etching by Pieter Roosing depicting six distinct scenes of Dutch market life, rendered with delicate hand-colouring.

Pieter Roosing, a Dutch artist active in the early nineteenth century, produced this series of six vignettes depicting daily life in a local market. The work captures the social and economic activity of the period, focusing on the exchange of goods and the interactions between vendors and patrons. Each scene is rendered with a focus on the specific attire and tools of the trade, providing a record of Dutch provincial life.

The composition is divided into six distinct panels, each framed by its own narrative. The figures are depicted in a style common to the era, with clear outlines and a restrained use of colour. The palette is muted, relying on soft washes of watercolour to define the clothing and produce, while the background remains largely sparse to keep the focus on the human activity. The artist employs a thin, precise line quality, characteristic of etching techniques used for popular prints during this time.

Roosing records various aspects of the market, from the sale of livestock and fish to the trade of fresh produce and household items. The inclusion of animals, such as the donkey and the dogs, adds a sense of realism to the setting. The work is signed 'By P Roosing te Rotterdam' in the lower left, confirming its origin. This print offers a glimpse into the commercial habits of the Dutch public, documenting the variety of goods available and the modest scale of trade. It is a piece of social history, preserved through the medium of the printed page, reflecting the observational nature of nineteenth-century genre art.

You might also like

Miss Ann Elliott, Beaufort, South Carolina - Thomas Sully — Thomas Sully
Que viene el Coco - Francisco de Goya — Francisco de Goya

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Zes-markttaferelen-Six-Market-Scenes-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791790211567.jpg?v=1791790511
