Jan Simon Voddigel
Jan Simon Voddigel lived a brief life, passing at age forty-two. Most of his career occurred during a period when the Dutch art market favoured lithography over traditional painting. He spent his working hours documenting the faces of his contemporaries, including the engraver Hermanus Numan and the museum director Cornelis Apostool. His work provides a rare visual record of the men who managed the print rooms and archives of the early nineteenth-century Netherlands.
Biography
Voddigel worked with a disciplined precision suited to portraiture. He avoided the romanticised brushwork common among his peers. Instead, he utilised clear lines and controlled shading to define the features of his subjects. In his rare depictions of animals, such as Grazende koe in een weiland, he applied this same formal rigour. He treated the anatomy of the cow with the same objective focus he applied to his human sitters.
Modern collectors appreciate Voddigel for his restraint. His prints offer a calm aesthetic for residential spaces. They avoid the visual clutter of more ornate styles. Because he prioritised clarity and accurate observation, his portraits remain accessible to those who prefer historical subjects without unnecessary sentimentality.
