Francis Seymour Haden, a surgeon by profession and a central figure in the nineteenth-century Etching Revival, produced A By-Road in Tipperary in 1860. This work demonstrates his technical mastery of the copper plate, utilising both etching and drypoint to capture the atmospheric qualities of the Irish countryside. Haden was instrumental in elevating the status of etching from a reproductive medium to an original art form, often working directly from nature to ensure a sense of immediacy.

The composition focuses on a quiet, tree-lined path. Haden employs a variety of line weights to differentiate the textures of the gnarled tree trunks from the delicate, flickering light filtering through the canopy.
