Robert Spencer, a central figure within the New Hope School of American Impressionism, frequently turned his attention to the industrial and residential architecture of Pennsylvania. In this work, he captures a view across a body of water, focusing on the interplay between the built environment and the natural elements. The composition is divided into three distinct horizontal zones: the foreground grasses, the reflective water, and the distant townscape.

Spencer employs a technique characterised by short, rhythmic brushstrokes. This method creates a sense of movement across the surface of the water, where the buildings on the far bank are mirrored in broken, flickering colour. The palette remains largely muted, relying on earth tones, soft blues, and greys to convey the atmosphere of a cool day. The architecture is rendered with a degree of abstraction, suggesting the forms of houses and a church steeple without resorting to rigid detail.

Unlike the more idyllic scenes often associated with the Impressionist movement, Spencer frequently chose to depict the working-class dwellings and mills of the Delaware River valley. His approach balances the observational qualities of plein air painting with a structured, almost decorative arrangement of shapes.
