This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a scene from the fourth act of the Chūshingura, the famous tale of the forty-seven rōnin. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was known for his focus on the dramatic intensity of kabuki actors. In this composition, the artist captures a quiet, domestic moment within the larger narrative of political intrigue and vengeance. The figures are rendered with the characteristic stylisation of the Katsukawa school, which prioritised the distinct facial features and expressions of the actors over idealised beauty.

The scene is set within a traditional Japanese interior. A seated figure leans forward, while a standing figure observes, their postures suggesting a tense exchange. The use of space is flattened, typical of the period, with architectural elements such as the sliding screens and the koto in the background providing context without overwhelming the subjects.
