This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a scene from the ninth act of the Chūshingura, the famous narrative concerning the forty-seven rōnin. The composition focuses on the domestic interior of the Yamana residence, where the wife of the retainer Yuranosuke receives visitors. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was known for his work in the yakusha-e genre, which focused on kabuki actors. His training is visible here in the expressive postures and the careful arrangement of the figures within the architectural frame.

The scene employs a flattened perspective typical of the period, using the sliding doors and the veranda to create distinct zones for the characters. The figures are dressed in elaborate kimono, with the patterns rendered through precise woodblock carving. The colour palette remains balanced, utilising soft earth tones alongside the deeper pigments of the garments. The kneeling figure in the foreground provides a sense of scale and formality, directing the viewer's attention toward the standing women.

Katsukawa Shun'ei was a significant figure in the development of late eighteenth-century printmaking. His work often captured the tension and emotional weight of theatrical narratives. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the drama of the kabuki stage into a static, two-dimensional medium. The architectural elements, such as the bamboo fence visible through the open door, provide a sense of place while maintaining the graphic quality of the print.
