This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō captures a kabuki actor in a dramatic pose, a genre known as yakusha-e. Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his realistic depictions of actors, moving away from the more stylised, generic faces seen in earlier ukiyo-e works. He focused on capturing the specific facial features and expressions of individual performers, which allowed audiences to identify their favourite stars with ease.

The actor is depicted in a dynamic stance, one arm raised and the other held across the body, suggesting a moment of high tension or a climactic scene from a play. The figure wears a kimono decorated with a floral pattern, layered over a checked garment. The presence of two swords tucked into the sash indicates that the character is a samurai. The composition is balanced, with the actor positioned centrally against a simplified background, which directs the viewer's attention to the posture and the expressive face of the performer.

Katsukawa Shunkō's work is characterised by a firm, confident line and a restrained use of colour.
