This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō captures a kabuki actor in a moment of dramatic tension. The artist, a member of the Katsukawa school, focused on the realistic depiction of actors, moving away from the stylised, generic faces common in earlier ukiyo-e works. This approach, known as 'yakusha-e', prioritised the individual features and specific expressions of the performer on stage.

The composition centres on the actor in a crouched, athletic stance. He holds a katana, the blade angled across his body, creating a diagonal line that draws the eye. His expression is one of intense concentration, typical of the 'mie' pose used in kabuki theatre to freeze a moment of high emotion. The artist uses clean, decisive lines to define the folds of the kimono and the musculature of the actor, while the limited colour palette of soft pinks, blacks, and muted yellows keeps the focus on the figure's posture and gesture.

Katsukawa Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and contributed to the development of the 'ōkubi-e', or large-head portrait, which allowed for greater psychological depth in actor prints. This work demonstrates the technical precision of the period, with the woodblock carving capturing the subtle variations in line weight. The background remains largely unadorned, a common feature in prints of this era, which ensures the viewer remains engaged with the theatrical performance rather than the setting.
