This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunshō depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in the role of a woman. Shunshō was a central figure in the development of yakusha-e, or actor prints, during the mid-Edo period. He moved away from the stylised, generic portrayals of his predecessors, choosing instead to capture the specific facial features and individual expressions of the performers. This shift toward realism, known as nigao-e, allowed audiences to recognise their favourite actors instantly.

The composition is balanced and elegant. The figure stands in a graceful posture, with the kimono folds rendered through clean, precise lines. The soft pink hue of the garment provides a gentle contrast against the neutral background, while the fan held in the actor's hand adds a sense of movement and theatricality. Shunshō founded the Katsukawa school, which influenced many later artists, including his pupil Hokusai.
