Description

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō, capturing the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in a dramatic, sword-drawing pose.

This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in the role of Onaka. Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his realistic approach to actor portraits, often referred to as yakusha-e. Unlike the more stylised depictions common in earlier periods, Shunkō focused on capturing the specific facial features and expressions of the performers, providing a more individualised representation of the kabuki stars of the Edo period.

The composition shows the actor in a dynamic pose, drawing a sword. The figure is dressed in a distinctive checked kimono, which provides a strong geometric contrast to the organic forms of the surrounding irises. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted earth tones, soft reds, and ochre, which is characteristic of the benizuri-e technique. This method involved printing with a limited number of colour blocks, often including a pink or red pigment known as beni.

Iwai Hanshirō IV was a prominent onnagata, an actor who specialised in female roles. In this print, the artist captures the tension of the scene through the actor's posture and the sharp angle of the blade. The background is minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the figure and his costume. The print reflects the cultural obsession with kabuki theatre in eighteenth-century Japan, where prints served as both promotional material and souvenirs for theatre-goers. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner, confirming the work as a product of the Katsukawa school. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the era, where the intersection of fashion, theatre, and printmaking created a unique visual language.
