This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Denkūrō II in the role of the legendary warrior Kagekiyo. Shunkō was a prominent member of the Katsukawa school, which gained recognition for its realistic approach to actor portraiture, known as yakusha-e. Unlike the stylised, idealised depictions common in earlier ukiyo-e, Shunkō focused on capturing the specific facial features and intense expressions of individual performers.

The composition presents the actor in a dynamic pose, suggesting the dramatic tension of a stage performance. Kagekiyo, a figure from the Heike Monogatari, is often portrayed as a blind, exiled warrior. Here, the actor wears a patterned kimono and carries a sword, with a large, straw-like bundle or cloak draped across his back.
