This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunshō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazō I in the role of the warrior Matano no Gorō. The work originates from the play Hana-zumō Genji Hiiki, which was performed at the Nakamura Theater in Edo during the eleventh month of 1775. Shunshō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on the portrayal of kabuki actors. He moved away from the stylised, generic features favoured by his predecessors, choosing instead to capture the specific facial characteristics and expressions of individual performers. This approach, known as nigao-e, allowed audiences to recognise their favourite actors with ease.

In this composition, the actor is shown in a dynamic pose, wearing a patterned kimono that features a grid design with floral motifs. He carries two swords at his waist, signifying his status as a samurai character. A branch of plum blossoms is visible behind him, adding a seasonal element to the scene.
