This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunshō depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in the role of the legendary warrior Asahina Saburō. Shunshō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraits of kabuki actors. He is credited with moving away from the generic, idealised facial features common in earlier prints, opting instead for realistic likenesses that captured the specific expressions and physical presence of individual performers.

The composition is defined by the bold, angular lines of the actor's costume. The large, sweeping shapes of the garment create a sense of volume and weight, contrasting with the delicate, precise lines used to render the actor's face and the crane motif on his robe.
