This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sōjūrō II in the role of Ōishi Kuranosuke, the leader of the forty-seven rōnin. The print belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of actors within the theatrical world of Edo-period Japan. Shunkō, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was known for his ability to capture the specific facial features and expressions of performers, moving away from the more generic, idealised portraits common in earlier ukiyo-e.

The composition is balanced and restrained. The actor stands in a three-quarter view, holding a folding fan in one hand and resting the other on the hilt of his sword. His kimono is rendered in a soft, pale green, decorated with the circular mon (family crest) of the Sawamura line. The background is divided into two sections: a lower area featuring vertical stripes and an upper area adorned with a delicate, stylised floral motif. This use of negative space and simple geometric patterns directs the viewer's attention to the actor's posture and the subtle tension in his expression.

Katsukawa Shunkō's work is characterised by a focus on realism regarding the actor's likeness. Unlike the more exaggerated styles of his contemporaries, Shunkō provides a grounded representation of the performer.
