Tōshūsai Sharaku remains a figure of mystery within the history of Japanese art. Active for only ten months between 1794 and 1795, he produced a series of portraits depicting Kabuki actors that departed from the idealised conventions of his contemporaries. This print captures the actors Matsumoto Kōshirō 4th and Nakayama Tomisaburō in their respective roles from the play Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi.

Sharaku utilised a style known as okubi-e, or large-head pictures, to focus on the psychological presence of the performers. Rather than presenting the actors as flawless icons, he exaggerated their facial features, expressions, and physical mannerisms. The lines are precise, capturing the tension in the jaw and the specific tilt of the head. The use of a mica background, known as kira-e, provides a metallic, shimmering surface that elevates the subject matter. This technique was expensive and reserved for high-quality prints, suggesting the importance of these specific theatrical portrayals.

In this composition, the interaction between the two figures is conveyed through subtle gestures and the arrangement of their costumes. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, soft reds, and the stark contrast of the black hair against the grey mica ground. The print reflects the intense, often dramatic atmosphere of the Edo period theatre. Sharaku's work provides a direct view into the performance culture of the time, documenting the specific actors who dominated the stage at the Kiri-za theatre. His approach to portraiture remains distinct for its unflinching observation and technical execution, offering a record of the Kabuki tradition that avoids the sentimentality found in other prints of the era.
