This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunshō captures two figures from the Kabuki theatre, presented within the distinctive fan-shaped format known as uchiwa-e. Shunshō was a central figure in the development of yakusha-e, or actor prints, during the mid-Edo period. He moved away from the stylised, generic portrayals of his predecessors, favouring a more realistic approach that captured the specific facial features and expressions of individual performers.

On the right, the actor Nakajima Kanzaemon is depicted with a dramatic, intense expression, his posture conveying the heightened emotion characteristic of a stage performance. His makeup and costume are rendered with precise lines, reflecting the aesthetic conventions of the time. To the left, Anekawa Shinshirō is shown in a more composed, feminine role, with delicate features and refined attire. The composition uses the fan shape to frame the subjects, creating a sense of intimacy and focus. The negative space surrounding the figures emphasises their presence, while the subtle colour palette, typical of prints from this era, relies on soft tones to define the garments and accessories.

Shunshō founded the Katsukawa school, which influenced many later artists, including Hokusai. His work provides a window into the popular culture of eighteenth-century Edo, documenting the performers who were the celebrities of their day. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in woodblock production, where each colour required a separate carved block. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate the mastery of the medium.
