John Martin, a figure of the British Romantic period, produced this mezzotint as part of his series illustrating John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. The work depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, a scene Martin renders with his characteristic sense of scale and atmospheric drama. The human figures appear small, almost insignificant, against the backdrop of towering, jagged cliffs and a vast, light-filled horizon that suggests the world beyond the gates of Paradise.

Martin utilised the mezzotint process to achieve a wide range of tonal values, from the deepest blacks of the rocky foreground to the ethereal, glowing light emanating from the upper reaches of the composition.
