Description
The central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, this masterpiece by Jan van Eyck depicts a theological scene of devotion with exceptional detail and light.
The Adoration of the Lamb forms the central lower panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, a polyptych commissioned for the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent. Jan van Eyck, working alongside his brother Hubert, completed this work in 1432. The composition depicts a complex theological scene set within a verdant meadow. At the centre, a lamb stands upon an altar, symbolising the sacrifice of Christ. A fountain of life flows in the foreground, while groups of figures gather from all directions to pay homage. These groups include prophets, apostles, martyrs, and confessors, each rendered with meticulous attention to costume and individual expression.
The background features a detailed landscape with distant cityscapes, trees, and a clear sky illuminated by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Van Eyck employs oil paint to achieve a level of luminosity and detail previously unseen in European art. The textures of the velvet robes, the metallic sheen of the armour, and the delicate botanical specimens in the grass demonstrate his technical mastery. The perspective is expansive, drawing the eye across the meadow toward the horizon, yet the scene maintains a sense of order through its symmetrical arrangement. This work represents the height of the Early Netherlandish tradition, where observation of the natural world meets symbolic religious narrative. The clarity of the light and the precision of the brushwork allow for a close examination of every figure and element within the crowded composition.
