Thomas Hill, a painter associated with the later years of the Hudson River School, travelled to Alaska in the late 1880s to document the dramatic topography of the region. This work captures the atmospheric conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, where jagged mountain peaks emerge from dense, swirling mists. Hill employs a loose, painterly technique to render the interplay between the solid rock faces and the ephemeral clouds that cling to the slopes.

The composition is divided into three distinct horizontal zones: the calm, reflective water in the foreground, the dark, forested shoreline, and the towering, snow-dusted summits above. Hill uses a cool palette dominated by shades of violet, slate blue, and muted grey to convey the chill of the northern climate. The water surface is handled with subtle horizontal strokes, suggesting a stillness that contrasts with the verticality of the mountains.

Unlike the highly detailed, panoramic canvases of his earlier career, this piece shows a more focused, intimate approach to the subject.
