Allegory of the Virtues - Correggio

Painted around 1531, this work by Antonio da Correggio forms part of a pair of allegorical canvases commissioned for Isabella d'Este, the Marchesa of Mantua. The composition presents a complex iconographic programme, focusing on the representation of moral qualities through human figures. At the centre, a seated woman, often identified as Virtue, is surrounded by various attributes and attendants. She holds a globe and a helmet, symbols of worldly governance and protection, while a winged figure above crowns her with a laurel wreath. To her left, a figure rests beside a lion, representing Fortitude, while other figures engage with instruments of measurement and celestial observation.

Correggio employs a soft, sfumato-influenced technique, characteristic of his mature style. The figures possess a fluid, graceful quality, with limbs arranged in gentle curves that guide the viewer across the canvas. The lighting is warm and golden, creating a sense of atmospheric unity that binds the foreground figures to the distant, hazy horizon. The drapery is rendered with fluid brushwork, showing a mastery of volume and texture that defines the High Renaissance approach to the human form. Unlike the more rigid compositions of his contemporaries, Correggio favours a sense of movement and soft transition, allowing the figures to interact with a naturalistic ease.

This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance complex symbolic narratives with a harmonious visual arrangement. The inclusion of putti in the upper register adds a sense of lightness, contrasting with the grounded, serious nature of the seated virtues below.
