In this composition, Bloteling captures the moment of their encounter. Arethusa is positioned on the bank, her form rendered with the precise anatomical modelling characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Alphëus emerges from the water, his gaze fixed upon her, his head adorned with aquatic foliage.

Bloteling was a master of the mezzotint and etching techniques, and this work demonstrates his technical control over line and tone. The foliage is rendered with fine, rhythmic hatching, creating a sense of density in the wooded background.
