Karel Petrus Cornelis de Bazel was a central figure in the Dutch architectural and design scene at the turn of the twentieth century. This woodcut, titled Argonauten: manlijk en vrouwlijk vuur, reflects the artist's interest in Theosophy and esoteric symbolism, which permeated much of his graphic output. The composition is strictly balanced, featuring a central, bearded figure radiating light from a triangular halo, positioned above a flame. Two figures, one on each side, mirror one another in a gesture of prayer or invocation.
