A dramatic engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicting the mythological poet Arion rescued by a dolphin, rendered with the muscularity and tension of Dutch Mannerism.
This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the Greek poet Arion, who, according to legend, was rescued from the sea by a dolphin after being cast overboard by sailors. Muller, a master of the Dutch Mannerist tradition, employs a highly muscular and contorted figure for Arion, typical of the period's fascination with the heroic nude. The composition is dynamic, with the figure of Arion twisting across the back of the dolphin, his gaze directed upwards towards the turbulent, cloud-filled sky.
The technical execution demonstrates Muller's command of the burin. The cross-hatching and varied line weights create a sense of volume and texture, from the smooth, taut skin of the dolphin to the billowing drapery and the agitated surface of the water. In the background, a ship is visible, providing a narrative anchor for the scene. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print reflects the humanist education common among artists and patrons of the late sixteenth century, framing the mythological subject within a philosophical context.
Muller was part of the Haarlem school, which was heavily influenced by the works of Cornelis van Haarlem. This print is a fine example of the period's preference for complex, dramatic poses and high-contrast lighting. The work captures the tension of the moment, balancing the physical struggle of the sea with the calm, musical focus of the poet. The print remains a significant example of Dutch printmaking, showing the transition from the late Renaissance to the more dramatic sensibilities that would define the coming century.
