Description
A masterful seventeenth-century engraving by Claude Mellan, depicting the spiritual elevation of Saint Paul through precise, singular line work.
Claude Mellan, a French draughtsman and engraver, produced this work during his time in Rome. The engraving depicts Saint Paul in a moment of spiritual elevation, surrounded by clouds and cherubic figures. Mellan is recognised for his technical mastery, particularly his development of a unique engraving style that relies on varying the thickness of a single line to create form and shadow, rather than using traditional cross-hatching techniques.
In this composition, the figure of Saint Paul occupies the centre, his body angled upwards with arms outstretched in a gesture of divine reception. The anatomical rendering is precise, reflecting the influence of the classical tradition prevalent in seventeenth-century Roman art. The surrounding clouds are rendered with soft, swelling lines that provide a sense of volume and ethereal atmosphere. The cherubs, emerging from the base of the composition, add a sense of scale and religious narrative to the scene.
The Latin inscription, 'Sive in corpore sive extra corpus nescio', refers to the Second Epistle to the Corinthians, where Paul describes his vision of being caught up into the third heaven. Mellan captures this mystical experience through a restrained, monochromatic palette that focuses the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow across the saint's musculature and the drapery. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to achieve tonal depth through the manipulation of line weight alone, a method that distinguishes his oeuvre from his contemporaries. This print is a fine example of the technical rigour and stylistic clarity that defined Mellan's contribution to the printmaking traditions of the Baroque period.
