Description
A classic ink and wash painting by the Qing dynasty master Shitao, depicting a serene mountain retreat during the autumn season.
Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains one of the most influential figures of the early Qing dynasty. As a member of the Ming imperial clan who became a Buddhist monk, his work reflects a life of displacement and personal reflection. This piece exemplifies his approach to the shan shui tradition, where the artist prioritises individual expression over strict adherence to established academic conventions.
The composition features a mountain retreat nestled within a rugged, undulating terrain. Shitao employs his characteristic brushwork, combining dry, textured strokes for the rock formations with fluid, ink-washed areas to suggest depth and atmosphere. The inclusion of a small dwelling suggests a scholarly retreat, a common motif in literati painting that represents the ideal of withdrawal from worldly affairs. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy ochres and muted greens to convey the seasonal transition of autumn, while the calligraphic lines provide structure to the organic forms of the trees and peaks.
Shitao was known for his theory of the single brushstroke, which he believed could capture the essence of nature through a spontaneous and intuitive process. In this work, the viewer observes this philosophy in action, as the forms appear to emerge directly from the movement of the brush rather than through rigid outlines. The presence of calligraphic inscriptions in the upper left corner integrates text and image, a hallmark of Chinese painting that invites the viewer to engage with the work as both a visual and literary experience. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink and wash, preserving the delicate balance between the solidity of the mountains and the ethereal quality of the mist.
