Alexandre Jacovleff produced this work during the Croisière Noire, a trans-African expedition organised by André Citroën between 1924 and 1925. As the official artist for the mission, Jacovleff documented the people and environments encountered across the continent. This portrait depicts a Banda woman from the Ubangi-Shari region, now the Central African Republic, holding a child.
