This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts the legendary town boss Banzuiin Chōbei. The image originates from the series titled Story of Brocades of the East in the Floating World, published in 1867. Yoshitoshi, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced this work during a period of significant political and social transition in Japan. The composition captures a moment of extreme violence, characteristic of the artist's interest in dramatic, often gruesome, historical and theatrical narratives.

Banzuiin Chōbei is shown in a state of mortal injury, yet he maintains a composed posture while drinking from a wooden bucket. The stark contrast between the pale skin of the figure and the splatters of red pigment creates a visceral visual experience. The artist employs clean, precise lines to define the anatomy and the folds of the yellow garment, which is inscribed with text. A katana rests against the wooden structure in the background, providing context to the preceding conflict. The inclusion of a scroll of text in the upper right corner serves to ground the image in the literary traditions of the period, offering a narrative explanation for the scene.

Yoshitoshi was known for his technical skill and his ability to push the boundaries of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
