Ilya Repin painted Barge Haulers on the Volga between 1870 and 1873. This work depicts a group of eleven men pulling a barge upstream along the Volga River. The composition focuses on the physical toll of their labour. Each figure is rendered with individualised features, showing a range of ages and expressions, from the weary youth in the centre to the older, stoic men at the front. The artist observed these workers during his travels along the river, sketching them in situ to capture the reality of their existence.

The scene is set against a bright, expansive sky and a sandy riverbank. The light is clear, casting soft shadows that define the forms of the men and the texture of their worn clothing. The barge itself sits in the background, a reminder of the burden they pull. Repin avoids idealising the subject. Instead, he presents the men as individuals caught in a harsh economic system. The horizontal orientation of the canvas emphasises the slow, rhythmic movement of the group as they trudge forward.

This painting is a primary example of the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public by depicting contemporary social conditions. By focusing on the humanity of the labourers, Repin created a work that remains a clear observation of nineteenth-century Russian life. The technical execution, particularly the handling of light and the anatomical accuracy of the figures, demonstrates the artist's training at the Imperial Academy of Arts.
