This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. Wierix, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, produced a vast quantity of prints during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His work is characterised by precise line work and a mastery of the burin, which allowed for the fine tonal variations seen in this composition.

The scene shows the body of Christ laid out on a shroud, surrounded by mourning figures. The Virgin Mary is positioned centrally, supported by Saint John, while Mary Magdalene kneels in prayer to the right. Two other figures, likely Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, stand behind the Virgin. The presence of the ladder and the cross in the background provides a clear reference to the preceding Deposition from the Cross. In the foreground, vessels containing ointment and a basin are placed, symbols associated with the preparation of the body for burial.

The Latin inscription at the base, taken from the Book of Zechariah, reads: 'Dolebunt super eum, vt doleri solet in morte primogeniti' (They shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son). This text frames the visual narrative within a devotional context, common for small-scale prints of this period. The composition is structured with a focus on the emotional state of the figures, using clear, rhythmic lines to define the drapery and the anatomical forms. Wierix was known for his ability to translate complex theological themes into accessible visual formats for a contemporary audience. This print reflects the technical standards of the Antwerp school, where the Wierix family operated a successful workshop, producing works that circulated widely across Europe.
