The painting depicts the arrest of Feodosia Morozova, a noblewoman who refused to abandon the Old Believer faith. She is shown being transported through the streets of Moscow on a sledge, her hand raised in a two-fingered sign of the cross, which was a symbol of her defiance against the official church reforms.

Surikov organises the composition as a procession moving diagonally across the canvas. The crowd surrounding the sledge displays a variety of reactions, ranging from mockery and curiosity to sympathy and reverence. The artist spent years studying the historical details, including the specific textures of the furs, the traditional Russian garments, and the architecture of the period. The snowy ground serves as a unifying element, reflecting the cold, grey light of a winter day in Moscow.

This work is a primary example of the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public by depicting national history and social realities. Surikov avoids idealising the scene, focusing instead on the psychological tension between the central figure and the onlookers. The scale of the painting allows for a detailed examination of individual expressions, from the beggar sitting in the snow to the stern faces of the guards. The artist uses a muted palette to convey the harshness of the environment, while the dark robes of Morozova provide a stark contrast against the white snow.
