A portrait of a young girl by Robert Henri, featuring expressive brushwork and a direct, candid composition.
Robert Henri, a central figure in the Ashcan School, produced this portrait of a young girl known as Bridgie in 1913. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture, which prioritised the immediate, expressive quality of the sitter over formal academic precision. Henri often sought out subjects in urban environments, finding beauty in the everyday lives of ordinary people. His technique here relies on broad, confident brushstrokes that define the form of the child while maintaining a sense of spontaneity. The subject is depicted against a dark, indistinct background, which pushes her figure forward and directs the viewer's attention to her face. The contrast between the deep, shadowed tones of the setting and the brighter colours of her clothing creates a sense of depth. Her expression is direct and unposed, capturing a moment of quiet observation. The garment, described in the alternate title as a Chinese dress, provides a decorative element with its patterned surface, rendered through quick, gestural marks of paint that suggest texture rather than detailing every stitch. Henri was a proponent of the idea that art should be a reflection of life. He encouraged his students to paint with a sense of urgency and honesty. This portrait reflects that philosophy, as the paint application remains visible and active across the canvas. The palette is balanced, using warm reds and yellows in the clothing to offset the cooler, darker tones surrounding the figure. By focusing on the individual character of the sitter, Henri avoids sentimentality, instead presenting a candid study of childhood. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing the viewer to appreciate the physical application of the medium and the artist's energetic approach to the canvas.
