Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist known for his meticulous attention to natural detail, produced this lithograph during his later career in France. While he gained early recognition for his documentation of North American indigenous cultures, his later work shifted toward the observation of European wildlife and forest environments. This piece belongs to a period where he aligned with the aesthetic values of the Barbizon School, focusing on the quiet, unidealised observation of the natural world.

The composition centres on a small, shaded stream flanked by dense, overgrown vegetation. The ducks are positioned in the lower left, with one bird captured in a moment of movement, its wings partially extended.
