Sakai Hōitsu was a central figure of the Edo-period Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative aesthetic and use of gold leaf. This work, originally executed as a folding screen, demonstrates the characteristic Rinpa focus on seasonal motifs and the interplay between natural forms and abstract backgrounds. The composition features a weeping cherry tree, its branches laden with blossoms, set against a flat, luminous field of gold leaf. The gold provides a non-representational space, removing the subject from a specific temporal or geographical context.

The artist employs a refined brush technique to render the gnarled bark of the tree and the delicate, drooping foliage. The green mound at the base provides a grounding element, populated by small, seasonal plants that suggest the transition of time.
