Joseph Pennell, an American artist who spent much of his career in London, produced this etching during the early twentieth century. It captures the interior of St. Paul's Cathedral, focusing on the choir and the distant altar. Pennell was a master of the etching medium, and his work often documented the urban environment of London with a keen eye for structural detail and atmospheric light.

The composition employs a low vantage point, which emphasises the scale of the cathedral's architecture.
