This work by Lucas van Leyden depicts the moment Christ encounters Saint Veronica on the road to Calvary. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Renaissance, prioritising narrative detail and the precise rendering of textures. Christ occupies the centre, his figure draped in a heavy, dark robe that contrasts with the ornate, metallic armour worn by the soldiers surrounding him. The soldier to the left wears a breastplate adorned with a sun motif, while the figure to the right wields a whip, adding a sense of immediate tension to the scene.

Saint Veronica kneels in the foreground, offering a cloth to Christ. Her attire, featuring a brocaded bodice and a deep red skirt, demonstrates the artist's attention to contemporary fashion and fabric quality.
