Johann Christian Reinhart, a German artist who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this etching in 1799. The work depicts the biblical narrative of the temptation of Christ within a rugged, mountainous setting. Reinhart was known for his ability to integrate human figures into expansive, dramatic natural environments, a hallmark of his approach to the heroic landscape tradition.

The composition is structured around a deep, receding space.
