Paul Sandby, often referred to as the father of English watercolour, produced this aquatint as part of his documentation of the British Isles. The print depicts the medieval fortress of Conwy Castle, situated on the banks of the River Conwy in North Wales. Sandby utilised the aquatint process to achieve subtle tonal gradations, mimicking the appearance of a wash drawing. This technique allowed him to capture the atmospheric quality of the Welsh light as it reflects off the water and illuminates the stone ruins.
