This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the first day of creation, a subject drawn from the Genesis narrative. Muller, a prominent Dutch printmaker and painter, was active in Amsterdam during the late sixteenth century. His work is characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, which favoured elongated figures, complex poses, and a high degree of technical precision in line work.

The composition is circular, a format often used in the period for allegorical or cosmological subjects. At the centre, a muscular, dynamic figure representing the Creator dominates the space. He is shown in a state of active motion, with one arm outstretched as if to command the separation of light from darkness. Above him, an angelic figure assists, holding a pair of dividers, a traditional symbol of divine geometry and the measurement of the cosmos. To the right, a female figure, often interpreted as an embodiment of the firmament or the nascent earth, stands partially draped, emerging from the void.

Muller employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the swirling, atmospheric clouds that surround them. The contrast between the illuminated areas and the deep shadows creates a sense of volume and drama. The print is a fine example of the technical skill required for engraving on copper plates, where every line must be carefully calculated to convey texture and light. The inscription 'Dies I' at the top identifies the subject as the first day of creation, marking the beginning of a series that explores the biblical origins of the world. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to translate complex theological concepts into a highly structured visual language, typical of the intellectual climate of the Dutch Golden Age precursors.
