Description
A delicate 1739 pastel portrait of the young Crown Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony by the Venetian master Rosalba Carriera.
This portrait depicts the young Friedrich Christian of Saxony, later Elector of Saxony, during his visit to Venice in 1739. Rosalba Carriera, a Venetian artist, gained international fame for her mastery of the pastel medium. Her ability to capture the soft textures of skin and fabric made her a preferred choice for European nobility on their Grand Tour.
Carriera employs a delicate touch, using the powdery nature of pastel to create a luminous quality. The subject wears a formal coat featuring a complex brocade pattern, contrasted by the bold, saturated blue of his sash. The dark, atmospheric background ensures the focus remains on the sitter, whose youthful features are rendered with subtle shading. The inclusion of ermine fur at the edge of the frame denotes his royal status, yet the composition maintains a sense of intimacy characteristic of Carriera's work.
Unlike the rigid, formal oil portraits common in the eighteenth century, this piece demonstrates the lighter, more personal approach associated with the Rococo period. Carriera avoids heavy outlines, preferring to build form through soft transitions of colour. The attention to the texture of the wig and the reflective quality of the fabric highlights her technical precision. This work remains a fine example of the portraiture that defined the Venetian school during the mid-eighteenth century, capturing the elegance of the era without unnecessary artifice. The print preserves the soft, matte finish of the original pastel, allowing the viewer to appreciate the artist's handling of light and shadow across the sitter's face and attire.
