This work is a central panel from the Isenheim Altarpiece, originally commissioned for the hospital chapel of the Monastery of St. Anthony in Isenheim. Matthias Grünewald employs a stark, uncompromising realism to depict the suffering of Christ. The body is marked by the physical trauma of the event, with skin tones rendered in sickly, greenish hues and the hands contorted in agony. The cross itself appears to sag under the weight of the figure, adding a sense of physical strain to the composition.

To the left, the Virgin Mary is supported by John the Evangelist, while Mary Magdalene kneels in prayer at the base of the cross. To the right, John the Baptist gestures toward the central figure, accompanied by the Latin inscription, 'He must increase, but I must decrease.' The figures are draped in heavy, voluminous garments that contrast with the emaciated form of Christ. The background is a dark, desolate void, which serves to isolate the scene from any earthly setting and focuses the viewer on the theological gravity of the moment.

Grünewald departs from the balanced, harmonious ideals often associated with the Italian Renaissance. Instead, he utilises expressive distortion and a sombre palette to evoke a visceral emotional response. The lighting is artificial and dramatic, casting deep shadows that define the musculature and the folds of the fabric. This piece remains one of the most recognisable examples of German religious art from the early sixteenth century, demonstrating the artist's ability to combine technical precision with intense psychological depth. The work was intended for a hospital setting, where its depiction of physical pain was meant to provide comfort to those suffering from ergotism and other ailments of the period.
