Description

A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the mythological transformation of the Trojan fleet into sea nymphs by the goddess Cybele.

This etching by Johann Wilhelm Baur depicts a dramatic episode from Virgil's Aeneid. The goddess Cybele, shown in her chariot drawn by lions, descends from the heavens to intervene as the Trojan fleet is threatened by fire. Through her divine power, the wooden vessels are transformed into sea nymphs, who emerge from the water to swim away from the shore. Baur, a German artist active in the early seventeenth century, was known for his mastery of small-scale narrative scenes and his ability to convey complex mythological events within a single frame.

The composition is dominated by the swirling, atmospheric clouds that bridge the gap between the celestial figure of Cybele and the terrestrial scene below. Baur employs fine, precise lines to delineate the textures of the ships, the waves, and the figures of the newly formed nymphs. The contrast between the solid, grounded forms of the ships and the ethereal, vaporous quality of the clouds creates a sense of movement and divine intervention. The etching captures the precise moment of metamorphosis, balancing the technical requirements of printmaking with the narrative demands of the classical source material.

Baur spent significant time in Italy, where his work was influenced by the dramatic lighting and theatrical compositions of the Baroque period. This print reflects his interest in classical literature and his skill in translating epic poetry into visual form. The work is characterised by its clarity of line and its focus on the narrative action, providing a clear window into the seventeenth-century interpretation of Roman mythology. The inclusion of the number 140 in the lower corner suggests this piece was part of a larger series illustrating Ovid or Virgil, a common practice for printmakers of the era who sought to provide comprehensive visual companions to classical texts.
