A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō featuring a Daruma doll and an owl rendered in a monochromatic red palette.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts a whimsical pairing of a Daruma doll and an owl. Bunchō, a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, was known for his work in the mid-Edo period. The print employs a restricted palette, relying on a singular red tone against a neutral paper background. This technique, often associated with the production of surimono or private commissions, allows the focus to remain on the clean, calligraphic lines of the figures. The Daruma, representing the founder of Zen Buddhism, is rendered with the characteristic wide eyes and facial hair associated with the figure. Beside it, the owl is depicted with a similar degree of stylisation, creating a visual dialogue between the two subjects. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy at the top of the composition integrates text with image, a common practice in Edo-period print culture. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the lower sections, confirming the work's provenance within the Bunchō oeuvre. Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium. The lines are deliberate, and the composition is balanced, avoiding unnecessary clutter. The choice of a monochromatic red scheme provides a cohesive aesthetic, drawing the viewer's eye to the interplay between the rounded form of the Daruma and the feathered texture of the owl. This piece offers a glimpse into the playful side of Japanese printmaking, where religious iconography and natural subjects were often combined for artistic effect. It remains a fine example of the technical skill and creative range present in 18th-century Japanese graphic arts.
