This etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Punt depicts the biblical narrative of David and Goliath. The composition is based on an earlier painting by Peter Paul Rubens, which was housed in the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. The scene captures the immediate aftermath of the combat. David stands over the fallen giant, his sword raised to deliver the final blow. The physical exertion of the young hero is conveyed through his posture and the tension in his limbs. Jan Punt was active in the mid-eighteenth century and is known for his reproductive prints after Old Masters.
