Description
A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical victory of David over Goliath.
This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical narrative of David and Goliath. The composition focuses on the immediate aftermath of the combat, with David standing over the fallen giant, Goliath. David holds the giant's sword aloft, preparing to deliver the final blow. The artist employs a clear, narrative structure, placing the primary figures in the foreground while the background shows the retreating Philistine army and the advancing Israelites.
Collaert uses precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of their garments. The engraving technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows beneath the figures to the lighter, etched lines of the distant hills and sky. The scene is framed by a sense of motion, as the soldiers in the background flee the site of the conflict. A Latin inscription at the base of the print provides context, referencing the First Book of Samuel, chapter 17, which recounts the defeat of the Philistine champion.
As a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, Collaert was part of a tradition that disseminated religious and mythological imagery across Europe. His work reflects the technical proficiency common to the period, where printmakers sought to translate complex narrative scenes into reproducible formats. The attention to detail, from the armour of the soldiers to the expressions of the central figures, demonstrates the standard of craftsmanship expected in sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the Northern Renaissance, where biblical stories were frequently interpreted through the lens of classical composition and technical rigour.
