This engraving by Johannes Wierix depicts the biblical account of Absalom, the son of King David, who met his end during the battle in the forest of Ephraim. Wierix, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the use of fine cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the armour and foliage.

The composition follows the narrative found in 2 Samuel 18. Absalom is shown suspended by his hair from the branches of an oak tree, his arms raised in a gesture of vulnerability. Joab, the commander of David's army, approaches on horseback, poised to strike with a spear. The scene is crowded with soldiers and horses, creating a sense of chaotic movement that is characteristic of the Mannerist style. In the background, a distant city provides a sense of scale, while the foreground is occupied by soldiers observing the event.

Wierix was known for his ability to translate complex theological and historical narratives into small-scale prints. His work often reflects the influence of contemporary painters, yet he maintains a distinct graphic clarity. The Latin inscription at the base of the print, 'Absolon ex pugna fugiens ex arbore pendet. Illius Ioab et ferit hasta latus', translates to 'Absalom, fleeing from the battle, hangs from a tree. Joab strikes his side with a spear'. This print is a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Wierix workshop, which produced a vast catalogue of religious and allegorical subjects during the late sixteenth century. The attention to detail, from the individual leaves on the tree to the intricate metalwork on the soldiers' breastplates, demonstrates the technical rigour expected of professional printmakers in the Low Countries during this period.
